AFRICAN WORKSHOPS

Here you can see descriptions of Baisikelis workshops in Africa.

Arusha, Tanzania

In Tanzania. Baisikeli has a workshop that is being managed by Grethe and Leo Erbs. They have been working in Africa since 1981. The workshop is mainly working on mending used Danish bicycles, sells them locally in Arusha, but they also experiment with the bikes and rebuild them to fit specific transportation needs.

When a container of bikes are shipped to the workshop is becomes the basis of a practical bike mechanic education and for further development of the workshop. The used Danish bicycles are first and foremost used to educate and train young Tanzanians to work with bikes. They are being taught about mending but also about administration, sales and logistics.

Over a period of years, the workshops is meant to develop into producing bikes locally with export in mind, and an ambition to make new standards for African production and design.

Masanga, Sierra Leone

Since December 2007, Baisikeli has sent used Danish bikes to the workshop, the is on the hospital grounds of Masanga Leprosy Hospital. Here, we have made an agreement on a regular shipment of 120 bikes every 3 months. They will be refurbished and sold locally. A third of the profit is for the Hospital and two-thirds helps developing the workshop and the employees.
